MELANIE WALKER
FOR MELANIE WALKER , A TRIP TO THE VSGA WOMEN ’ S AMATEUR SEMIFINALS IN 2020 WAS JUST THE START of a run of stellar golf that helped her earn the title of USA Today ’ s top female high school golfer in the nation . Walker , who won the VHSL ’ s Girls ’ Open championship in the spring of 2021 , recently concluded a strong career at Robinson Secondary and will play for the University of Missouri beginning in the summer of 2022 .
Virginia Golfer caught up with Walker to talk about her rise in the Virginia junior ranks , and what the future holds .
Virginia Golfer : First off , what sparked your interest in golf ? Melanie Walker : My dad brought me out to a golf course from a young age , and playing multiple tournaments on the Peggy Kirk Bell Golf Tour and creating friendships with my fellow competitors allowed me to start to enjoy the game of golf .
VG : Where do you think you ’ ve grown the most from your freshman to senior year in terms of your golf game ?
AGE : 18 CLUB : Springfield Golf & Country Club HIGH SCHOOL / COLLEGE : Robinson / Missouri
MW : I think my strategy for the golf course is where the most improvement is . I am much more intentional about how I plan out the course and how to attack it .
VG : You were named the best female high school golfer in the nation by USA Today in August . What was your reaction upon
