Justin Young wasn’ t sure about the state of his golf game when he teed it up at the Delta Dental State Open of Virginia at Ballyhack GC, his home course, back in July. A top-10 finish there was encouraging, and it helped spur him on a year-end surge that included a pair of championships. Young broke free of a tight leaderboard on the final day at Williamsburg Golf Club and posted a three-day 207 to win the VSGA Mid-Amateur and claim his second VSGA title. Young previously won the final edition of the VSGA Public Links Championship in 2013. Young finished four shots clear of John Rosenstock( Elizabeth Manor G & CC) and Scott Shingler( Dominion Valley CC).
72ND CAPTAIN’ S PUTTER MATCHES Thanks in part to perfect three-point performances from VSGA members Steve Serrao( Willow Oaks CC), Jeff Long( Evergreen CC), John Rosenstock( Elizabeth Manor G & CC) and West Virginian Philip Reale, the Virginias team ended a two-year losing streak by topping the Carolinas squad 26-22 at Greenville Country Club in South Carolina to regain the Captain’ s Putter. The Virginias held a one-point lead after the first day and took 13½ out of a possible 24 points in singles.
3RD VSGA FOUR-BALL MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIP Mid-Amateurs Justin Young( Ballyhack GC) and Jimmy Delp( Laurel Hill GC) defeated Jeff Long( Evergreen CC) and Kyle Bailey( Roanoke CC) 2 up after Delp clinched the victory with a birdie putt on 18. In the event’ s senior division, Dave Pulk( Two Rivers CC) and Skip Zobel( Princess Anne CC) needed 19 holes to hold off Scott Reisenweaver( Salisbury CC) and Leon Roday( Kinloch GC).
