The truly unique experience
at The Greenbrier is The
Bunker. Underneath—way
underneath—one wing of the
hotel and behind doors meant
to withstand a nuclear blast is
a Cold War era fallout shelter,
built as a top-secret relocation
facility for members of Congress.
Completed in 1961, it included
decontamination chambers,
a laboratory, a pharmacy, and
dormitory-style accommodations
for approximately 1,100 people
(every member of Congress got
a plus-one). It was kept in a
constant state of readiness with
food, water, medical supplies, and
communications equipment until
1992, when it was exposed by the
Washington Post and the secret
was revealed. But you still can’t
bring a camera or cellphone.
During the Cold War, the U.S. government
maintained a top-secret bunker, which was built
