ROBERT TRENT JONES GOLF CLUB IN GAINESVILLE is no stranger to hosting high-level international golf events , having hosted the first four Presidents Cups played on American soil .
In 2024 , the VSGA member club will have an opportunity to welcome the world ’ s best women . In February , the LPGA announced that RTJ will be the next American host of the Solheim Cup , a biennial match-play competition between the top female golfers from the United States playing against their counterparts from Europe .
The competition is moving to even-numbered years beginning in 2024 so it is not played in the same year as the Ryder Cup . Spain will host the Solheim Cup in 2023 .
“ It is a tremendous honor to be selected to host this prestigious event and we believe our club is an ideal venue for this competition ,” RTJ president George Cantrell said .
The club hosted the Presidents Cup in 1994 , 1996 , 2000 and 2005 , and in 2015 , it hosted the PGA Tour ’ s Quicken Loans National . It has also hosted three VSGA championships : two Amateurs and a Mid-Amateur .
“ Playing the Solheim Cup on this magnificent course near our nation ’ s capital will provide the perfect backdrop for these elite athletes to battle for the Cup ,” LPGA commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan said . “ I have no doubt that the club and its members will serve as wonderful hosts , and that fans from around the world will enjoy an experience of a lifetime .”
VSGA member clubs will host two prestige events in 2024 . Along with RTJ and the Solheim Cup , Kinloch Golf Club in Manakin Sabot will host the 2024 U . S . Mid-Amateur Championship , with nearby Independence Golf Club serving as the stroke-play qualifying co-host .
STRONG SHOWINGS FOR VSGA MEMBERS AT DRIVE , CHIP AND PUTT The three VSGA members who participated in the Drive , Chip and Putt National Finals at Augusta National in April all finished within the top five in their respective age divisions , led by an impressive second-place showing from Jordin Christine de Graaf in the girls 10-11 group .
Ten points were up for grabs in each of the three disciplines for the 10 members of each age group . deGraaf finished just a half point behind winner Kylie Chung to take second place . She checked in with the second longest drive in the group ( 200.2 yards ). She was fifth in chipping and tied for third in putting . Chung nabbed 10 points in the putting discipline to push her just ahead of deGraaf , a VSGA Junior Golf Circuit member from Virginia Beach .
Leesburg ’ s Emerson Roychoudhury , a member at The Club at Creighton Farms , was fourth in the girls 12-13 division , finishing with 22 points , four behind winner Jenna Kim . Roychoudhury finished with 10 points in chipping , eight in driving and four in putting . VSGA JGC member Jason Park tied for fifth in the boys 12-13 division with 17 points , four behind winner Michael Jorski .
CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON UNDERWAY Richmond ’ s John Rosenstock has been a finalist in the VSGA Amateur and runner-up in both the VSGA Mid-Amateur and Four-Ball Championships . So when he and partner Trey Wren of Suffolk went into the second round of the 4th VSGA Multi-Format Team Championship with a chance to win , Rosenstock referred to it as “ a vendetta ,” as it was finally time to break through and win .
A 1-under-par 71 at The Dominion Club in the modified alternate shot second round was enough for Rosenstock and Wren to hold off 2021 champions Evan Beck and Mikey Moyers by a shot , giving Rosenstock his first VSGA championship and Wren his second ( he and father Ken won the net VSGA Parent-Child Championship in 2019 .)
In the senior division , the winners of the last two VSGA Senior Stroke Play Championships — Fredericksburg ’ s Jon Hurst and Montpelier ’ s David Jordan — paired up to claim a one-stroke victory over Randy Newsome and Neil Davis . Hurst clinched the victory with a four-foot par putt on No . 9 after Davis had birdied the hole to give his side a chance .
