Member Clubs ditions . The Bogey Rating™ reflects the scoring difficulty for the bogey player under the same conditions . While we don ’ t often see the Bogey Rating™ published on a scorecard , it is an important variable in determining the Slope Rating™ . A Slope Rating™ represents the difference in playing difficulty for all players compared to the scratch player .
The day of the rating , our team starts each hole at the tee and ends at the green . In between it performs an evaluation for both the scratch and bogey player . Each hole is evaluated for effective playing length and obstacles . Effective playing
length factors include roll , elevation , doglegs / forced lay ups , wind and altitude ( the last two , if applicable , are evaluated at the course level ). Obstacles include :
• Topography : Impact of terrain on play
• Fairway : Difficulty of keeping the ball in the fairway
• Green target : Difficulty of hitting the green with the approach shot
• Recoverability and rough : Difficulty of recovering if fairway and / or green are missed
• Bunkers : How they come into play and how difficult they are to recover from
• Crossing obstacles : Penalty areas , extreme rough and out of bounds which are carried to play the hole
• Lateral obstacles : Penalty areas , extreme rough and out of bounds when they come into play laterally on the hole
• Trees : Impact of the trees on the play of the hole
• Green surface : Difficulty of chipping and putting on each hole
• Psychological : Cumulative effect of obstacles on a player ’ s score
After the team has completed the rating , they will often play the course , which helps them to confirm their findings from earlier in the day . The Course Rating System™ now falls under the World Handicap System™ umbrella , so the same objective process used in the United States is used around the world to rate courses .
In the days following the rating , we will use the data collected to assign final values for the effective playing length factors and obstacles on each hole . Unless it is a new course or one which has undergone renovations in recent years , , final results are published and sent to the club with an effective date of January 1 of the following year .
