FORMER CAVALIER BRITTANY ALTOMARE NOW AMONG LPGA’S TOP AMERICANS by LISA D. MICKEY HILE THE CORONAVIRUS-DELAYED 2020 professional golf season has presented a challenge for all tours, former University of Virginia Cavalier Brittany Altomare knows that patience got her where she is now on the LPGA Tour, and that it will be key to earning her first LPGA win. By mid-March this year, the native of Shrewsbury, Mass., had only played in two LPGA tournaments with a season-best tie for 13th at the ISPS Handa Women’s Australia Open in February. But if Altomare’s past three seasons are any indication of what to expect once the LPGA returns to action, the former four-time All American believes she is ready to move into a new place alongside the tour’s top talent. Since 2017, she has produced 10 top-10 finishes, including four as runner-up, recorded career earnings over $2.24 million, and moved to a career-high 28th world ranking this spring. Altomare also became the LPGA’s sixth highest-ranked American player queued behind top-ranked Nelly Korda, Danielle Kang, Lexi Thompson, Jessica Korda and Lizette Salas. “I feel like I’m getting closer,” said Altomare, 29, who won three times at Virginia and was the 2013 ACC Player of the Year before earning LPGA membership in 2014. “I just have to keep putting myself into contention and being more patient when I’m there so that things will happen when they’re supposed to happen.” ASSOCIATED PRESS vsga.org M AY/J UNE 2020 | V IRGINIA G OLFER 25
