For buddy trips, your goals may well be to play the top courses and then enjoy a few bourbons afterward. That means you’ ll want the championship rotation— Nos. 2, 4, and 10— which are all walking-only layouts. No. 2 is the U. S. Open anchor site that’ s grueling, historical, and famous for its Donald Ross crowned greens. Many locals prefer No. 4, Gil Hanse’ s masterpiece, over No. 2 for its visual drama. And No. 10, the new Tom Doak design, is built in an old sand quarry with loads of elevation changes. For added measure, you can walk Nos. 2 and 4, but hiring a caddie may enhance the experience and save you a few strokes as they help you navigate the runoff areas. If you opt for that, book the caddies in advance.
