KOHLER TROPHY, POLLARD TROPHY EVENT: VSGA Women’ s Amateur Championship winner( Kohler) and medalist( Pollard) NAMES OF NOTE: Lily Harper Martin( 7), Robbye King Youel( 6), Mary Patton Janssen( 6), Donna Andrews( 5), Jane Mack( 4), and Lauren Greenlief( 3).
Mary Patton Janssen held the Kohler Trophy six times.
THE STORY: The champion’ s trophy is named after Rennie Kohler, who was a key figure in the VSGA Women’ s Division in the mid-20th century. Though she was not a championship competitor, Kohler’ s name is synonymous with the growth of competitive women’ s amateur golf in Virginia.
A strong player out of Farmington Country Club, Ann Pollard won the VSGA Women’ s Amateur in 1964, was finalist in 1963 and stroke-play qualifying medalist in 1961. Her misfortune was coming along at the same time as Virginia Golf Hall of Famers King and Janssen, who dominated the era.
NANCY HOLLENBECK TROPHY EVENT: VSGA Women’ s State Team Matches NAMES OF NOTE: Mount Vernon Country Club, Country Club of Virginia, and Army Navy Country Club. THE STORY: Hollenbeck, 1975 VSGA Women’ s Amateur champion, was a Navy Lieutenant Commander who became the first female member of the Army Navy CC Board of Governors, serving from 1980 – 99. She was also a renowned Rules official who worked events all over the D. C. area.
F. J. D. MACKAY TROPHY EVENT: VSGA Junior Stroke Play Championship NAMES OF NOTE: World Golf Hall of Famers Curtis Strange( 2) and Lanny Wadkins( 2), as well as multi-time VSGA Amateur winners Jake Mondy( 2) and Brinson Paolini( 2). THE STORY: Fred J. D. Mackay worked alongside Fritz Souder to guide the VSGA through the difficult Great Depression and World War II years. Mackay served a formal term as president from 1951-52.
PRESIDENT’ S CUP EVENT: VSGA Senior Women’ s Amateur NAMES OF NOTE: Mimi Hoffman( 5), Audrey Najjum( 5), and Peggy Woodard( 5). THE STORY: This one has gone through some changes. The original trophy was donated in 1958 by Winnie Kegloe, one of the founding members of the Women’ s Division. The next trophy came from Ethel Meador of Richmond, then it was named the Elizabeth Hanna Trophy( Hanna was a past Women’ s Division president). The cut-glass trophy that goes to the champion today was introduced in 2008.
ANN LEWIS TROPHY EVENT: VSGA Junior Girls’ Championship NAMES OF NOTE: Jessica Hollandsworth( 3), Lee Shirley( 3), Susan Slaughter( 3), Donna Andrews( 2), Kandi Kessler Comer( 2), and Jenny Suh( 2). THE STORY: Lewis was president of the VSGA Women’ s Division from 1986 – 87 and an ardent supporter of junior girls’ golf.

HARRY W. EASTERLY TROPHY EVENT: Senior Open of Virginia NAMES OF NOTE: Rick Schuller( 4), Buck Brittain( 2), Dave Pulk( 2), Roger Newsom, Keith Decker, and Matt Sughrue. THE STORY: Easterly, a Country Club of Virginia member, was one of three Virginians to serve as USGA president. He also served as VSGA president from 1965 – 66. Fittingly, the Senior Open was played at CCV’ s Westhampton Course for its first 11 years.
VINNY GILES TROPHY EVENT: Virginias-Carolinas Junior Boys’ Matches THE STORY: One of the world’ s legendary amateur golfers, Giles got his start at Boonsboro Country Club in Lynchburg, where these matches are held every other year when they visit Virginia.
CORBETTE KING TROPHY EVENT: VSGA Senior Stroke Play Championship NAMES OF NOTE: Five Virginia Golf Hall of Famers won multiple titles in this event: J. P. Leigh( 4), Bob Moyers( 3), Keith Decker( 2), Jim Kite( 2), Moss Beecroft( 2). THE STORY: One of the first pioneers of the VSGA Sectional Chairman program, King traveled around the state setting up tournaments and rating courses. He served as VSGA president in 1975-76.
H. M.“ BUNNY” BLANKINSHIP TROPHY EVENT: VSGA Senior Amateur NAMES OF NOTE: Moss Beecroft( 6), Buck Brittain( 4), Keith Decker( 3), Richard B. Payne( 3), and E. D. Mustard( 3). THE STORY: Blankinship, a Virginia Golf Hall of Famer, was VSGA president from 1959 – 60 and was instrumental in starting the Fox Puss Invitational at his home club, Boonsboro Country Club. It remains one of the state’ s premier events today.
