Tom Barry , PGA ( 1952-2025 ) Jon Guhl , executive director of the Middle Atlantic PGA section , described Tom Barry in the simplest of terms ahead of Barry ’ s induction into the Virginia Golf Hall of Fame in October 2023 .
“ He is a walking lesson in how to treat others with dignity and class and a reminder of the old-school mentality of showing up to work every day with a servant mentality to help others ,” Guhl said .
Barry , who spent 44 years as the head golf professional at Lakeside Park Club , died on January 18 at the age of 73 . He was a member of both the Virginia Golf and MAPGA Halls of Fame , but more importantly , he was a cherished mentor to many during a career as a PGA professional that stretched 46 years .
“ A fabulous golf professional and a wonderful person ,” wrote fellow Virginia Golf Hall of Famer and renowned teacher Kandi Kessler Comer on a social media post announcing Barry ’ s death . “ He will be missed by many . A great mentor for many over the years .”
Added Nick Stubbe , more widely known on social media by the nickname Fat Perez : “ Had such an impact on me from a young age . Impossible to realize and appreciate back then . So wildly loved — an incredible role model . Loved his club , his members and the game . Sometimes he felt too nice to be real . There is no FP without Tom Barry .”
Barry ’ s impact was profoundly felt at Lakeside , where both an invitational tournament and the pro shop bear his name . Barry was a three-time recipient of the MAPGA Horton Smith Award for excellence in PGA member education , won the MAPGA ’ s President ’ s Award ( 1990 ) and the VSGA ’ s Service to Golf Award ( 2012 ), and was the MAPGA ’ s Professional of the Year in 1994 .

Wayne Jackson ( 1934-2025 ) Wayne Jackson ’ s golf excellence began early . He won the VSGA Amateur Championship |
at age 21 in 1956 and claimed the title again nine years later . When the VSGA became the first association in the country to begin a mid-amateur championship for players 30 and older ( it ’ s now 25 and older ), Jackson was the trendsetter , beating Moss Beecroft by 10 strokes in 1977 , several years before the USGA began its Mid-Amateur Championship .
Jackson , who died peacefully in Gloucester on January 17 at age 90 , won more than 60 amateur golf titles during a sterling career , including 17 club championships at James River Country Club . He appeared in the 1963 U . S . Open and won the Richmond City Championship and Kenridge Invitational twice each . Jackson was part of the 2020 Class of the Virginia Golf Hall of Fame and was inducted a year later as the 2020 ceremony was postponed due to the COVID pandemic .
Jackson also earned spots in the Randolph-Macon College Hall of Fame and the Lower Peninsula Athletic Hall of Fame .
