DECC Seeking New Home , Title Sponsor

Changes are coming to the Dominion Energy Charity Classic , the annual PGA TOUR Champions event that has been held at Richmond ’ s Country Club of Virginia since 2016 . The event will be seeking both a new title sponsor and a new home starting in 2026 .

2025 will be the final year the championship — which is the opening event of of the PGA TOUR Champions ’ Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs — will be held at CCV ’ s James River Course .
The championship has raised more than $ 11 million for local charities and has consistently been tabbed as a players ’ favorite in yearly award voting . This year ’ s event is scheduled for Oct . 18-20 .
“ The decision to end our title sponsorship was driven by a focus on our company ’ s ‘ back-to-basics ’ strategy , which is captured by Dominion Energy ’ s new mission : To provide the reliable , affordable
, and increasingly clean energy that powers our customers every day ,” Dominion Energy spokesman Ryan Frazier told WTVR TV in Richmond . “ We still have two more years of the Dominion Energy Charity Classic at The Country Club of Virginia , and we ’ ll work to make those two editions the best yet . We thank our partners , the thousands of volunteers , and the tens of thousands of patrons who have make the classic the players ’ favorite tournament year after year .”
In 2018 , the PGA TOUR Champions and Dominion Energy announced an extension to the original contract , which was scheduled to run through 2029 . DECC tournament director Steve Schoenfeld said in a statement that “ The Champions Tour has every intention of remaining in Richmond and the process to identify and secure a new title sponsor and host golf course for 2026 and beyond will begin immediately .”
Three Richmond-area clubs have the infrastructure and history to host the event going forward . Independence Golf Club has hosted multiple State Opens of Virginia and will be a stroke-play qualifying host for the upcoming U . S . Mid-Amateur Championship . Hermitage Country Club is a past host of the PGA Senior Tour ’ s Crestar Classic , including in 1988 when Arnold Palmer won his final professional title at Hermitage . The Dominion Club in Glen Allen played host to Nationwide / Nike Tour ( now KornFerry Tour ) events in the early 2000s .
While speculating on sites is fine , Schoenfeld pointed out the more pressing matter is securing a title sponsor .
“ Without the title partner , we don ’ t have an event ,” he told Richmond Biz- Sense . “ The golf course is secondary . It ’ s cart before the horse if you do the course first .”
