Cutalong Comes to Life

After 20 years of fits and starts , Tom Clark ’ s Lake Anna course is set to fully open this summer // by ARTHUR UTLEY

Golf course architect Tom Clark was a busy man when the saga of Cutalong Golf Club at Lake Anna began in 1999 . At the time , the firm of Ault , Clark & Associates , had 23 golf course projects under construction . Eight , most of which were 27- and 36-hole projects , belonged to Clark . Golf course construction was in full boom everywhere . To paraphrase the Field of Dreams mantra ,

“ If you build it , they will come .” “ Golf was king . People wanted to build more golf than they wanted houses ,” Clark says , looking back on those days .
Clark , whose firm is based in Marshall ( Fauquier County ), has had a weekend retreat at Lake Anna , a 17-mile long reservoir with 200 miles of shoreline encompassing 13,000 acres , since 1993 . The lake is located mostly in Louisa and Spotsylvania counties with a finger or two in Orange County and is easily accessible from Fredericksburg , Charlottesville , Richmond and Northern Virginia .
