What was old is now new. What’s new is being made newer. Indeed, the ultra-popular Sea Island Resort, nestled midway between Savannah, Ga., and Jacksonville, Fla., along some of the prettiest stretches of Georgia coastline, has never stopped evolving. As a result, golfers looking for a top-notch experience only short trek from the norm could do much, much worse. Three courses, various exquisite lodging choices and extensive on-site amenities all combine to make Sea Island a one-stop shop for a pristine golf vacation. Add in a boost from the annual RSM Classic running up on its 10th year, and the Sea Island brand has probably never been stronger. “We’ve gotten really nice television coverage (through the RSM Clas- sic), also showcasing beautiful weather. We get a lot of folks who are coming because they see us on TV,” Sea Island director of golf Brannen Veal said. “Now, we’ve got both [the Plantation and Seaside Courses] being played in the RSM tournament, so we get exposure on both of those. We have definitely benefited greatly from holding a Tour event, and we have benefitted of when we hold it. It’s a small, boutique event, but it gets a lot of exposure.” In November 2019, scores of professionals will take aim at another $6 million-plus purse and look to add their names to a list of champions that already includes Charles Howell III, Kevin Kisner and inaugural winner Heath Slocum. The Davis Love III-hosted tournament will create plenty of fan traffic for a week’s worth of activity. As for the rest of the year, Sea Island does its part to not only feed off that momentum, but also inspire it for other reasons. vsga.org M A R C H / A P R I L 2 0 19 7 | V I R G I N I A G O L F E R 31
