IN MEMORIAM:
Jane Mack
VSGA ARCHIVES
IF A WOMAN’ S IMPACT ON HER SPORT can be found in how she inspires a younger generation, then Jane Mack’ s influence on women’ s golf in Richmond was significant. Mack, who died unexpectedly on Dec. 30, 2016, at the age of 72, was a four-time Virginia State Golf Association Women’ s Amateur champion. She won the inaugural VSGA Women’ s Stroke Play Championship in 1978.
Mack dominated the Richmond Women’ s Golf Association scene in her heyday, claiming 15 RWGA city women’ s amateur championships, including four straight from 1970 – 73 and winning four times in five years on two other occasions.
Caroline Curtis, who has won the last two VSGA Junior Girls’ Golfer of the Year awards, praised Mack’ s influence on women’ s golf in the city during her speech at the
VSGA’ s Annual Meeting in January.
Mack’ s career was derailed by a litany of injuries to her back, shoulders, hips and knees, but her devotion to the game was remarkable. The Richmond Times-Dispatch noted that Mack participated in the 2009 RWGA city amateur as a spotter and rules official just a few months after undergoing two knee-replacement procedures in a four-month span.
“ Jane set the bar for championship women’ s golf in Virginia,” VSGA executive director Jamie Conkling said.“ And even when she wasn’ t playing, she was always available to help and offer input on how to make women’ s golf in Virginia better.”
HERMAN PEERY JR. Peery, the former head golf professional at The Omni Homestead Resort’ s nowdefunct Upper Cascades Course, died on Jan. 21 at his home in Hot Springs.
Peery, who served two years in the infantry of the United States Army, spent 42 years as the head pro at the Upper Cascades Course, starting as a shop boy in 1948 before taking over caddie master duties in 1952. In 1955, he was promoted to pro. Among his pupils at the course was Gerald Ford, who received a lesson from Peery just two days before his presidential inauguration.
Peery retired in 1998 after 50 years of service to The Homestead.
