for half a century. In 2009, the property and
the club were sold to Dwight Schaubach,
who had a new vision for the property.
Schaubach engaged John LaFoy, who
apprenticed under George Cobb and is best
known in Virginia for Glenmore Country
Club and Kiskiak Golf Club, to undertake
a complete renovation of the 50-year old
course. LaFoy lead a complete “makeover”
of tees, greens, bunkers as well as fairways
and cart paths.
The “new” Williamsburg Golf Club features a course with the same interesting,
but not severe topography — rolling terrain, marsh land and a large lake, portions
and fingers of which come into play at
different places on the layout. A standout
hole is the par 5 16th. From the tee, the
player is faced with a tree-lined corridor
that turns gently right to left. With the
