Iron – Recreate Impact
Driver – Front Foot Towel Drill
Try the following two drills to better understand your impact blueprint across irons and drivers.

Impact Drills:

Iron – Recreate Impact

How to set it up
1. Step up to the golf ball with your iron stance. 2. Move into a mock impact position:
• Hands ahead of the ball
• Weight on the lead side
• Chest rotating open
How to do it
Hold the position for a few seconds. Return to address and make a slow half-swing, recreating the same impact feel. Repeat.
The idea attack angle on a 7-iron is 3-6 degrees down. This means that at impact, the hands are slightly ahead of the golf ball, while pressure shifts into the lead side and the body continues rotation toward the target.
What it teaches
• Forward shaft lean
• Ball-first contact
• Iron compression
Progression
The goal with irons is to feel the hands leading the clubhead through impact rather than flipping or scooping the ball into the air.

Driver – Front Foot Towel Drill

How to set it up
1. Place a small rolled towel underneath your lead foot. 2. The towel should create a slight upward tilt in the lead foot while keeping you balanced. 3. Tee the ball off the lead heel as normal with the driver.
How to do it
Make smooth swings while feeling your chest stay slightly behind the golf ball through impact. The goal is to sweep the ball off the tee while maintaining width and balance.
What it teaches
• Proper spine tilt at address and impact
• Upward angle of attack
• Upper body staying behind the golf ball through impact as the lower body drives pressure into the lower lead side
Progression
Start with slow swings at 40 – 60 % speed focusing on balance and centered contact. As the feeling improves, gradually increase speed while maintaining the sensation of the chest staying behind the ball through impact.
The ideal attack angle with a driver is 1-4 degrees upward. Because the goal is to launch the ball higher, the shaft remains much more neutral at impact compared to an iron. vsga. org J u ly / A u g u s t 2026 | V IRGINIA G OLFER
