S JENNIFER KUPCHO AND LINN GRANT departed the first tee for the final singles match at the 2024 Solheim Cup at Virginia’ s Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, a banner was seen in the grandstands.“ See you in 2026,” it read,“… in the Netherlands.” The Netherlands?
When most people think of the northwestern European nation, the first things that come to mind are tulips, art galleries, thriving nightlife, canals, dikes, and wooden clogs. Golf is far down the list. The Dutch Golf Federation is determined to change that come late summer.
Bernardus Golf in Cromvoirt, about an hour south of Amsterdam via train, will host the 20th Solheim Cup from Sept. 11 – 13, marking the most significant golf event to ever be played in the country. Captains from the U. S. and European teams gathered on site last September for a“ Year to Go” kickoff event. They got to the course in true Dutch style, meeting at Den Bosch Station and cycling the roughly seven kilometers to the course, just as many fans will do when the event starts later this summer.
Bernardus Golf is no stranger to high-level golf, having hosted three editions of the KLM Open on the DP World Tour since 2020. That tour tends to reside in obscure Golf Channel windows, meaning only the most hardcore of golf fans watch on a regular basis. With the Solheim Cup being televised nationally in the U. S., however, Bernardus Golf will get its big moment on the world stage.
