ITH BATTLES TO BE FOUGHT, spirited horses to tame, and a young nation to lead, George Washington wasn’ t thinking about golf in the 1700s as he navigated some 8,000 acres of Virginia farmland tucked alongside the Potomac River. And while the first 18 holes of Scotland’ s Old Course at St Andrews were standardized in
1764, General Washington was retiring from military duties on the other side of the Atlantic, focused on managing his expansive colonial estate and enlarging his Mount Vernon mansion with a keen eye on his new interest in agriculture. He would become the new nation’ s first president in 1789. Fast forward a little over two centuries later and that first American president and gentleman planter would be top of mind to Virginia golf enthusiasts at Mount
Vernon Country Club( MVCC). Located on the sprawling grounds of Washington’ s former estate, the private golf club found it had even more reason to celebrate this year’ s America250, marking the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
MVCC even stepped up as the first golf club to become a Supporting Partner in America’ s Semiquincentennial celebration, featuring national events and initiatives throughout the year marking America’ s 250th birthday. MVCC joins a lengthy list of America250 Supporting Partners, such as Folds of Honor, George Washington’ s Mount Vernon, Frederick Douglass Foundation, American Veterans Center, and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy.
This year’ s robust America250 celebration has even more meaning on the same acreage of Virginia land where MVCC members now hunt for birdies and Washington once tracked wild turkeys and pondered a nation’ s future.
“ I’ ve been a member of Mount Vernon Country Club for 15 years, and for me, the history there is the one thing that really sets it apart from any other clubs in the country,” said Jennifer Condon, national executive vice president of America250.
“ Since we’ re on one of the original [ George Washington ] farms, I love that we have leaned in on that history— not just now for the 250th, but really since the club’ s founding,” she added.
