Your personality is important . Toxic personalities ruin golf teams . If you have an opportunity to interact with a college coach , act with maturity and be the type of person you would want to recruit . Remember that you will be traveling with the team on a bus or plane and staying in the same hotel for each of your college tournaments .
Never give up . The worst thing you can do in a tournament is give up ! Never withdraw ( without good reason ), no-show or give up coming down the stretch . Coaches want to see that you can be mature enough to complete your round with the same effort that you started .
Be knowledgeable . Know what you ’ re talking about . Be prepared for coaches to ask questions like “ what are you working on swing-wise ?” or “ what do you struggle with in your game ?” Being dedicated practice facilities , golf courses , and enough funding to get players to the professional level . If you just want to use golf to get into college , then you should be looking at schools that have good academic programs where the golf team schedule isn ’ t as rigorous . You might be looking at Division II and Division III programs if that ’ s the case .
This information just scratches the surface , but it ’ s a good start if you ’ re serious about taking your game to the collegiate level . Again , talent can only get you so far . A combination of talent , academic status , work ethic and personality will give you the best opportunity to get recruited . vsga . org J ULY / A UGUST 2023 | V IRGINIA G OLFER
