Farm Neck RIGHT : George Wright Municipal
Administration ( WPA ) funding to complete the construction . Like many courses of the time , George Wright ’ s construction was halted by the Great Depression . According to various records , “ 60,000 pounds of dynamite were used for excavation , 72,000 cubic yards of dirt were spread to raise the ground above the swamp level and 57,000 linear feet of drainage pipe were laid to drain the property .” It was truly a feat of engineering for the time .
Located less than hour northwest of the city , Red Tail Golf Club is a Brian
Silva-designed 18-hole championship course set among classic New England land of hilly forests , ponds and creeks . Land that was formerly a historic former army base , Fort Devens , which was the premier Army Reserve training facility in New England until its closure in 1996 . While Silva is known for his restoration work , this original design sits nicely on the land without being forced . The green complexes take cues from those Golden Age gems Silva lovingly restored , but at the same time , they are subdued enough for public play .
Cape Cod / Martha ’ s Vineyard
When venturing up to New England , there ’ s nothing like a week on the Cape or a mini vacation to the Vineyard . While they take a bit more effort to get to , they are classic New England summer destinations .
One of the few true ‘ links ’ courses in the United States , Chatham Seaside Links out on the Cape is a nine-hole course which plays to a Par 34 at only 2,200 yards . But don ’ t be fooled .
