Honors Top Scholars

T
his spring, the VSGA-VIP
Scholarship Foundation helped
Virginia-bound college students
take their first steps toward a
degree by awarding $96,500 in
scholarships to high school seniors who have
an interest in golf.
All told, the VSGA recognized 46
scholars—43 high school seniors who are
going on to attend colleges and universities
within the commonwealth, as well as
extending aid to three graduate school
students pursuing degrees in turfgrass
management at Virginia Tech. This year’s
grants totaled $101,000, with $53,500
going to 11 four-year award recipients,
$43,000 going to 32 merit award winners.
Additionally, $4,500 went to three students
in graduate school at Virginia Tech.
Among the four-year award recipients was
Christopher Long of Blacksburg, the top male
applicant and C. Dan Keffer Award recipient.
Brittany Woo of North Chesterfield was
selected as the top female student, and earned
a Spencer-Wilkinson Award sponsored by
the VSGA Women’s Division.
“I would’ve never imagined in a million
years that I would get the top female
scholarship from the VSGA,” Woo said of
receiving a $7,000 grant. “I am so grateful
that I was chosen.”
The central Virginian has immersed herself
into the community and worked extensively
with The First Tee of Chesterfield. She’s
volunteered at a local elementary school,
Gordon Elementary, and assisted at Special
Olympics events. Woo still found time to
