75th VSGA Club Championship
The Foundry GC, Powhatan | May 1 The Foundry has hosted the VSGA Club Championship since 2014. Finally, that home-course advantage paid off. It didn’ t hurt that the home team had a touring professional and fourtime State Open of Virginia champion at its disposal.
Jay Woodson, Kenneth Cocolin, Starell Cox and TJ Austin posted an 11-under-par 133 in the morning shotgun, good for a three-shot victory over Hermitage Country Club. Lexington Golf & Country Club, Salisbury Country Club and Spring Creek Golf Club’ s‘ B’ team rounded out the top five.
32nd VSGA Super Senior Stroke Play Championship
Stonehenge G & CC, Richmond | May 31 – June 1 Six years is a long time to go between titles, especially when you play in the super senior ranks.
Peter Jacobi( Army Navy CC) joined the short list of two-time Super Senior Stroke Play champions by posting an even-par 142 to finish two strokes clear of John Cuomo( Laurel Hill GC) and Mike Thompson( Stonehenge G & CC). Jacobi earned his first championship in 2011 when he was 68. At 74, he showed that savvy and experience count for something, avoiding big mistakes and saving his best golf for last, shooting 3 under on the back nine in the second round to pull away.

Field and format: Thirty-eight four-person teams split into two four-ball sides each, with the combined four-ball score counting toward the team’ s total.
It was over when: Woodson and Cocolin returned the best four-ball score of the day, an 8-under 64, two shots better than Hermitage CC’ s Craig Callens and Ben Beach.

It was over when: Jacobi made a birdie on No. 17, hitting a 3 wood off the tee, an 8 iron to within 8 feet of the hole and rolling in the birdie putt for a three. He took advantage of the 18-hole co-leaders’ struggles in the second round to make a move.

34th Virginia-West Virginia Team Matches
Glade Springs Resort, Daniels, W. Va. April 22 – 23 Led by a dominant run in Saturday’ s four-ball matches, the VSGA squad defeated their counterparts from the West Virginia Golf Association 19-9 to retain the Ye Ole Feudin Stick. Virginia has won the last eight meetings in the annual series.
Four Virginia players were a perfect 3-0 over the weekend: Jeff Long( Evergreen CC), Kyle Bailey( Roanoke CC), Justin Young( Ballyhack GC) and Buck Brittain( The Virginian GC).
QUICK FACTS:
Field and format: Invitation-only event featuring eight regulars, four seniors and two super seniors on each squad facing off in a series of foursome, four-ball and singles matches. One point available in each match.
It was over when: Virginia won six of the seven four-ball matches on Saturday afternoon.
U. S. Amateur Four-Ball Championships
In total, 11 VSGA members qualified or were exempt for the two U. S. Amateur Four-Ball Championships, which were held in late May. On the women’ s side, Alexandra Austin( Springfield G & CC) and Lauren Greenlief( International CC) advanced to match play before falling in the round of 32. On the men’ s side, Brandon Cigna( Laurel Hill GC) teamed with Maryland resident Ben Warnquist for the second straight year. After reaching the championship match a year ago, Cigna and Warnquist won their round-of-32 match at Pinehurst Resort before losing in the round of 16.
