Bell Bay Golf Club BELLBAYGOLFCLUB.COM Le Portage LEPORTAGEGOLFCLUB.COM If the postcard-esque setting of this course between the water and mountains doesn’t move you, it’s hard to say what will. Le Portage Golf Club is a good test for an avid golfer, with good scoring opportunities to be had along the way. Be sure to check out the course website, which does as fine a job as any of breaking down each hole with both shot recommendations and video tours. The course partners with lodging suppliers in Cheticamp on stay-and-play packages, so finding a place to bed down for the night won’t be a problem. 34 V I R G I N I A G O L F E R | J U LY /A U G U ST 2 0 1 6 vsga.org ALL PHOTOS COURTESY OF DESTINATION CAPE BRETON ASSOCIATION Nestled into Baddeck, an old trading post town, Bell Bay Golf Club is a place where you can feel history even as it gives way to modern amenities. The seaside course offers plenty to see, but if you get caught up in the visual splendor you might find yourself in some dicey golf situations. Designed by the prolific Thomas McBroom, the course plays more than 7,000 yards from the tips and packs a wallop in several spots, including a par-5 finishing hole that plays 545 yards even from the white tees. Rates in the busy season are $90 for 18 holes (half price for a second round that day), though thrifty golfers can walk nine holes after 5 p.m. for just $20. Travelers can stay on-site at the resort, which offers cottages and a hotel as well as a dining room and lounge.
