am Snead’s final golf course
design is getting a much-need-
ed makeover.
Poplar Grove Golf Club,
located in central Virginia’s
Amherst County, began a multi-mil-
lion dollar renovation project in the fall
to restore the property to its original
2005 luster. Ed Carton, who designed the
course with Snead more than a decade
ago, is overseeing the renovations.
Included in the first phase of the proj-
ect is a $1.7 million bunker renovation,
renewed teeing areas, replaced fairway
drainage and cart paths, and two brand-
new restrooms with comfort stations for
on-course access. A $400,000 tree-clear-
ing project will provide golfers with more
strategic options and better views of the
surrounding countryside.
Poplar Grove will also align with Tex-
tron to add a brand-new fleet of golf carts
and a comprehensive new equipment
package. The Manor House, which hous-
es the club’s food and beverage opera-
tion, will receive a full restoration that
includes a modern update to the interior
and a phase-two addition of 4,000 square
feet, which will include member exclusive
areas, a full bar and an indoor/outdoor
dining area with seating for 120.
“Poplar Grove is a rare, original design
inspired by one of the greatest players
this game has ever seen,” Poplar Grove
CEO Frank Murphy said. “We’re looking
forward to Ed leading the renovation
and we’re extremely excited to unveil the
new-look Poplar Grove this spring.”
Poplar Grove is targeting spring 2019
as a completion date for all first-phase
renovations.
