SOUTH CAROLINA’ S GRAND STRAND, an area anchored by the city of Myrtle Beach, has become almost synonymous with golf. Even though the number of courses no longer stands in the 100s, as it once did, the Coastal communities here can attach so much of their success to what happens on the miles of links from Little River all the way down to Georgetown.
With so many courses to choose from, there is no shortage of absolutely iconic holes, ones that set themselves apart with something special. However, regardless of which ratings panel conducts a poll of the top 18, the same six will show up almost unanimously. A pair each of par 5s, par 4s and par 3s bring about a challenge unlike any other. Design, playability and strategy are all the common theme; so, too, are ever-present eye-popping visual aspects, usually built upon the canvases the specific architects were given to lay out their gems.
Regardless of age— the oldest of the group opened in 1949 and the most recent in 2000— the Myrtle Beach Six have put themselves on a pedestal golfers wish to climb year after year after year.
