On other matters, the convention:
• Added gender identity and expression as a protected class for the

discernment process;
• Directed further review of the constitutionality and implementation of the new

Title IV provisions on clergy discipline;
• Reaffirmed the December 2012 deadline of enrollment in the Denominational

Health Plan;
• Created a task force on the study of marriage.

On so many of the key issues, passionate and energetic debate led to a positive
and optimistic feel for the future. As the Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori,
presiding bishop, put it, we have “found creative and pastoral ways to live with the
differences of opinion, rather than resorting to old patter
