The old fridge also didn’t work and was removed and an air conditioner was installed and all new gas lines were put in. The badly scratched old two-burner stove was re-powder coated and a new table was built to extend between the benches in the back where previously there had only been a board between the two benches allowing only for a bed and no dinette. Some panels of rot and damaged framework had to be repaired and replaced and as they were fixed new insulation was added in along with a rock guard on the front window. Other finishing details were the installation of a custom built wooden screen door, a drop down shelf on either end of the kitchen counter and a decorative back splash in the kitchen. Scruffy was finally fitted with new wheels, tires and a jack and then it was time to decorate! Julie tells me that she sewed the covers for the six bench seats herself. She has also sewed curtains for the trailer twice and has actually painted the interior of Scruffy three times! “The first time I painted the interior, I used paint I had left over from painting our guest room. The second time I painted the cabinets, I used the same paint as I had used for her exterior accent stripe. The third time I painted the cabinets, I I love the freedom she gives me to get away for a short trip and explore. Wherever I take her, she brings joy. 22 | vintagetrailermagazine
