Blossom has appeared overnight on the
cherry trees, the garden overflows with
tulips, primroses and cowslips, and at last
we can walk in the woods without sinking
into ankle-deep mud.
COMMENT
I wrote the following early in May, when just
starting work on this edition:
I know it is tempting fate, but I’ve got to say
it – at long, long last, the sun has appeared.
Even if I hadn’t seen it myself, I should have
known, just from the fact that the lawn
mower has died, the strimmer has run out of
cord, and the lawn is knee-deep – not to
mention the bright red faces I saw in
Alresford after the first Bank Holiday. May
appeared, and we could cast off those clouts
with extra abandon, and even (or would it be
a risk too far?) take the electric blanket off
the bed!
And it’s not a moment too soon, because the
summer events are starting any day now:
just look through these pages for news of
fairs, fêtes, shows, exhibitions and open
days - you’ll be spoilt for choice. We can all
come out of our winter hidey-holes and, to
borrow a phrase from ‘The Lion King’,
blinking, step into the sun. Better stop now,
before I burst into song!
Have a good summer.
Jill Buss
P.S. Dateline May 13th - I knew it! Apologies
to all – I seem to have brought back winter.
When will I learn to keep my mouth shut?
Open Day
The gardens of Broad Street, New Alresford
Sunday 14th July 2013
11am – 5pm
in aid of
The Neuroblastoma Society
(Helping to fight Neuroblastoma – a rare and aggressive childhood cancer)
and
The Alresford Society
A rare opportunity to visit many of these unique gardens in beautiful
Broad Street. These ancient burghage plots, as they were known
when laid out by Bishop de Lucy’s developers in about 1200AD, are
rare survivors of this ancient system of layout.
