Stay Safe On The Roads. Don’t drive tired Ø Plan in a 15 min rest break for every 2hrs of driving. Ø Avoid making long trips between midnight - 6am and 2-4pm when natural alertness is low. Ø Share the driving if possible. Ø Consider the weather conditions i.e. low sun, icy, wet, slippery roads make driving challenging. Adverse weather conditions If you have to go out in severe conditions, ensure you are prepared. Carry, at least, the following: Ø Extra / spare warm clothing and blankets. Ø Jump leads for the car battery Ø A thermos flask of warm drink and some food. Ø Warning triangle Ø Any medication you need to take regularly . Ø An ice scraper and de-icer Ø A mobile phone with a fully charged battery. Ø A first-aid kit Ø A torch Ø A pair of boots Ø A snow shovel Ø A map Ø Sunglasses due to the glare caused by snowy conditions. Above all consider; Do you need to make that journey? Don’t use your mobile phone while driving Ø If caught, there is a fine of £60 and three penalty points on your licence. Penalty points = higher insurance costs. Ø If you get six points within two years of passing your test, your licence will be revoked and you will need to re-sit the test. Ø If the case goes to court, you could risk a fine of £1,000, which rises to £2,500 for the drivers of buses, coaches, or heavy goods vehicles. Always buckle up Ø Drivers and front seat passengers in cars must wear a seat belt, unless they have a medical exemption certificate. Ø Children under the age of 14, travelling in the rear of a car that has appropriate restraints, must belt up. Adults travelling in the rear of a car must also use seat belts. If they are fitted, it is the responsibility of the adult passenger (not the driver) to ensure that they are using the seat belt.
