Village Voice December 2013/January 2014 | Page 3

Please join us in a silent cheer for all these generous people. COMMENT It has been a year of good news and bad news; first, the bad news: we have lost even more of our regular advertisers as the recession continues to bite. We at Village Voice were getting increasingly worried about whether we would be able to carry on. The good news: we have received grants again from Bighton Parish Council and Old Alresford Christy Hall Amenities Committee – for which, we thank you very much indeed. On behalf of all the people who help or contribute in any way to Village Voice, we’d like to wish all our readers a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful New Year. Jill and Geoff Buss PS Speaking of peaceful New Year, can we make a plea to those of you who like to celebrate with fireworks: remember this is a farming community. The animals don’t appreciate the fireworks half as much as you do. Thank you for showing consideration. Then, like a bolt out of the blue, an impressively large grant from the Arle Valley Benefice Educational Fund, which will help us to keep going for a long time to come. “Scallywags” by SOOP Theatre Saturday, 15th March 2014 at 7.30pm Bighton Village Hall In the face of the seemingly inevitable threat of invasion during WWII, British Intelligence comes up with a splendid notion the enemy would never think of - Scallywags! Recruited on a really very hush-hush basis at the local Post Office, thousands of ordinary folk were trained as saboteurs to conceal blunt objects, make do with a hole in the ground, dot their dashes and drink rum in the face of interrogation. With their characteristic blend of physical theatre, song and comedy-drama, SOOP asks the question: what if the invasion actually happened?
