COMMENT
Given the strange weather conditions in
2012, it is no surprise really that we went
straight from the longest, wettest summer I
can remember to the hard frost of winter,
bypassing the season of mists and mellow
fruitfulness almost entirely – a few bright
cold days with incredibly blue skies and a
biting wind, and then back to the rain, and
even snow in some places a little further
north.
It has been nice to meet new local residents
on those few dry occasions when people
have got out into the fields and woods at
weekends. We’re generally out in all
weathers, but rarely meet others when it’s
wet.
Established residents know that I’m always
banging on about local social events. At the
beginning of November we went to hear a
marvellous choir – Chantage - in St. Mary’s
Church in Old Alresford. We saw lots of
people we knew, and it turned into quite a
social event, not least because of the hard
work put in by the organisers, who also
provided tea and cakes afterwards. Maybe
choirs aren’t your thing. But there’s bound to
be something coming up locally that is. It’s
these events that bring people together, and
give us a wonderful sense of community.
At the time of writing we haven’t yet had the
inter-village quiz, but I know everyone who
attends each year will agree that it’s a
tremendous evening. The ever-popular
TOADS pantomime is imminent, and there’s
a joint concert, an evening of Christmas
music, at St John’s in Alresford on 15th
December. It will include the Alresford
Community Choir, together for just a year,
and going great guns. Further (but not
much) afield, after Christmas we have The
Moscow Drug Club (a wonderful musical
act) to look forward to at Bighton Village Hall
in March.
So all you new residents, this is a message
for you: get involved, turn up and join in.
Don’t be shy.

Greetings and thanks to all our helpers,
advertisers, readers and supporters, and we
wish you all a very Happy New Year; and
special thanks and best wishes to Bighton
Parish Council and the Old Alresford Christy
Hall Amenities Committee for helping to
keep us afloat with grants.
