CYCLE SAFETY ON THE ROAD. Cycling is a fun, convenient and healthy way to get around but cyclists and drivers usually share the same roads. Both can reduce the risk of accidents by following the rules of the road, acting responsibly towards other road users and taking account of some simple advice. Drivers: ● When turning left, watch for cyclists on the inside 90% occur in urban areas. ● Look behind you for cyclists before opening your door. ● Don't expect cyclists to ride close to the kerb. A cyclist in the middle of the road may be turning right. ● When cyclists turn right, you may have to wait behind them - Don’t get impatient and squeeze past. ● Make an extra check for cyclists at junctions and roundabouts. ● Dip your headlights if a cyclist is coming the other way so you don't dazzle them. Cyclists: Before you go out on the roads, stop and THINK! Here are a few basic safety tips that can help you stay out of trouble: ● First and Foremost, wear a helmet. ● Get trained and keep control. ● Be seen and heard. ● Check/maintain your bike regularly. ● Be alert and plan your route. ● Stay legal. Did you know: ● 75% of accidents happen at or near a junction. ● 80% of accidents occur in daylight. ● About one third of the cyclists killed or injured are children. ● Around three-quarters of cyclists killed have major head injuries.
