The words of the late Prof Wangari Maathai – her appeal for people to be ‘ like a hummingbird ’ and protect the forest – will be recalled by individuals and communities as they mark World Environment Day on 5 June . The Nobel Peace Prize Laureate urged people to get behind the campaign to mitigate the effects of greenhouse and climate change for the sake of present and future generations .
Strategy
The Village Market has aligned its corporate strategy to these aims by engaging with its clients , partners and communities in green projects .
Speaking on the hummingbird theme , United Nations Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon said that “ although individual decisions may seem small in the face of global threats and trends , when billions of people join forces in common purpose , we can make a tremendous difference ”.
The idea is that the future is in our hands and that people should get empowered to become more aware and conscious of the environmental impact of their everyday choices by making informed decisions .
