Art exhibitions hosted by the Joseph D.
Carrier Art Gallery in 2018 sharpened
the gallery’s focus on Italian heritage
and culture, and placed a spotlight on
issues of social relevance. The exhibitions
featured numerous works of art by 30
artists, 18 of whom are Italian-Canadians.

The largest exhibition of the year was
“MAMMA: In the Meantime,” a multimedia
exhibition of photographs, paintings,
drawings and video chronicling the story
of Italian-Canadian artist Tony Luciani
and his mother Elia as they experience
living with her dementia. (For more
information on this exhibition, see
feature story and “In the News” section
of this report).
This exhibition led to Tony’s major TED
talk in Boston, “A mother and son’s
photographic journey through dementia.”
Other notable exhibitions and events
included:
• “One Euro Italy“ - an exhibition of
original photographs by Serge Tesker
as part of the 2018 Scotiabank
CONTACT Photography Festival.
Tesker’s photographs portrayed an
ongoing campaign to revitalize remote
and beautiful villages across Italy.
• “Viva Vitalità Italiana: A Showcase of
Italian Heritage and Italian-Canadian
Women Artists” – hosted in celebration
of Italian Heritage Month, this event
included an exhibition of photographs
of Sicily’s Valley of the Temples by
Marcello Tarantino, and multimedia
works of art by eight Italian-Canadian
female artists painters, photographers
and sculptors.
• A travelling exhibition of reproductions
of drawings by the legendary Italian
filmmaker Federico Fellini, comprised
of cheeky images of famous Italian
culinary dishes and treats.
• A rotating exhibition of paintings, prints
and sculptures from the Joseph D.
Carrier Art Gallery permanent
collection were displayed in the gallery
and elsewhere in the Columbus Centre,
some for the first time in over 10 years.
The gallery also undertook a major
behind-the-scenes project to
restructure its inventory, exhibition
and preparation rooms.
