From the Editor
Viewpoint readers!
Welcome to the last issue of 2013’s Viewpoint Magazine. There has been much
effort poured into creating this concluding issue, and I am delighted to publish it
just a few days before Christmas. December’s theme is “service”. As enjoyable and
comfortable the season may be, we wanted to remind our readers what it means to
serve one another; of what the purpose of the first Christmas was, of what it
originally celebrated when Saint Nicholas secretly brought gold to the
impoverished sisters—heart of service and charity. It could have been the twenty
dollars you donated for the Philippines last month, or the soothing words you said
to your distressed friend. The value of service lies in the fact that you care for the
other person. So, we hereby encourage our readers to regard December as a time
to reach out and serve those in need.
We give special thanks to staff members and students who took part in
producing this particular issue. Jin Do Lee for managing our online publications,
Pak Daniel Sunarto and Pak Yanto for agreeing to be interviewed, Esther Kim for
providing us a cover page, Ms. Ruchika for helping our team with layouts, and
many others who happily gave up their valuable time and effort for Viewpoint.

don’t know how to answer that question. For a
while I thought I was passionate about movies, but
I realized that I only enjoy watching them. I love
music, but I don’t play any instruments. I can sing
but I get nervous when I sing in front of other
people. When I broke my foot last year, my life
turned upside down. Suddenly, I had to depend on
others to help me. I shared my frustration with my
friends, and they told me that I had always served
others so it’s probably my turn to let others serve
me. It was a strange thing to hear, and it made me
ponder. When I broke my foot, I was forced – for
the first time in my adult life, really – to rely fully on
others. I wasn’t able to serve others as much as I
had before, and that made me realize how much
service meant for me. I enjoy helping and serving other people, and I feel grateful for
every opportunity. I don’t know if I would call this my passion, but I do know one thing
- it brings fulfillment to my life. And really, isn’t that what’s important?
