IISSAC IIS- Recap

By Gary Go
200 words were not enough to describe this year’ s t h r e e- e v e n t IISSAC wi th enough detail. So without further ado, here is some more on what h a p p e n e d a t IISSAC.
This year ' s Cross
C o u n t r y, Swimming, and Badminton teams went to Bali for IISSAC, and came back( surprisingly) alive, and even won. Mountainview won first place for both guys and girls in cross country, and for girl’ s badminton doubles. Zach Armstrong placed in first for the Men’ s Open 5K( 5-kilometer race), while Bethany Armistead placed first for the Women’ s Open 5K. Lydia Smith, who ran a part of the 5K, injured her toe and could not finish the race. Jeremy Purwo, a crowd favorite known to one man as“ MVP”( most valuable Purwo), placed second in the Men’ s 3K. People cheered with as much excitement and passion as what one would expect from a crowd cheering excitedly and with much passion as Jeremy’ s position was announced after the race. Gary Go, a member of the cross country team who is not lost at the moment, fell into the ocean and fainted in it from sheer excitement at Jeremy’ s 2nd-place victory.
The swimming team did not win anything in the men’ s division, because no male swimmers were sent, and Dr. Donald McGavran was not allowed to partake in the competition. The women that were sent participated fairly well, with Aria Sider making it to the finals, and Brittany McGavran winning third place in a number of events.
The champion of the women’ s badminton tournament would be the doubleteam of Olivia Kusuma and Herlina Widodo. The men’ s badminton team fell short of two wins and did not make it to the finals. They were at a disadvantage due to BIS’ s( Bali International School) home advantage, and Wesley’ s( Wesley) involvement and care for sports that don’ t matter much. Honorable mention goes to Evan Sider; he did not make it to the finals, but he won every game but one( note: the scoring was done by team, not by individual player).
Although BIS did not make us banners to bring home to display our victory, we will be printing them ourselves to remind us of said victory and to make ourselves feel better. Mountainview’ s final IISSAC of the 2012-2013 season ended in spectacular fashion, with ribbons, trophies, empty wallets, and faces looking eastward to Bali with the shape of an“ L” on their foreheads.

One Complicated Question

( Because“ One Simple Question” was too mainstream.)
What significant event in your life defines who you are right now?
George Waters( 12th grade)“ Joining the musical helped me to make my final decision about pursuing my major in acting.”
Jeanie Kwak( 10th grade)“ Going to Youth Kosta, a Christian camp, for the first time. I learned who I am in Jesus and who I am living for.”
Sarah Lee( 8th grade)“ Transitioning to a new school, Mountainview. I had to explore myself more in order to know who I really am when nobody else but God knew.”
