Max’s 11 Tips
FOR KEEPING DATA SECURE WHILE TRAVELING
Twenty-year technology veteran Max Goldfarb knows a thing or two about
cybersecurity. Here are his top tips for keeping your data safe while on the road.
1 Never expect privacy when traveling. Always assume that any information you send electronically
can be intercepted and digital information on your smartphone, tablet or laptop is at risk of being stolen.
2 If you’re in a public place, the free Wi-Fi that’s offered probably won’t have encryption,
making it easy for people to intercept your data.
3 Avoid bringing unnecessary electronics with you; especially those containing sensitive information.
4 Never leave your electronics unattended — that includes not leaving them in a hotel room safe.
5 If possible, have a designated travel laptop that is fully updated with the latest security updates and
latest security patches, including antivirus protection software.
6 Subscribe to a reputable VPN service to keep your connection secure.
7 Before you leave, remove any software, apps or sensitive data that you don’t need for your trip.
Clear your browser cache files and remove all saved passwords.
8 Ensure that your phone is protected with a strong password or fingerprint identity recognition.
9 Back up important presentations that are crucial for your meetings on a secure USB drive.
10 Power Down! Many of us routinely keep our computers on all the time, but that renders it more
susceptible to hacking. Turning your computer off severs the connection for a would-be attack.
11 Invest in a privacy filter that will keep people around you in airport lounges or coffee shops from being
able to see what’s on your screen.
