“Stereotype Directionality and Attractiveness Stereotyping: Is

Beauty Good or is Ugly Bad?”

Griffin & Langlois’s research shows how Caucasian women are perceived according to their physical appearance by 331 introductory psychology students. (4) The researchers did a survey where photographs of 1634 different Caucasian women were used. (4) From that initial amount of photos, 6 pictures were chosen as the highest attractiveness women and 6 for the lowest attractive girls.

Then from that initial amount of photographs were selected 6 more pictures classified as medium attractive stimuli. It is important to say that the pictures were evaluated “for positive or negative attributes” from those students, that’s the way how researches chose the most relevant pictures. This data from Griffin and Langlois’ research makes the paper reliable and a good source, besides it is free of mechanical and grammatical errors. The authors give many arguments in their paper to confirm their point about the diverse stereotypes given to attractive and unattractive people.

As an observation, this article helps me to prove my point about people’s prejudice to those who do not have the standard physical appearance and how this is portrayed in literature but also in other fields as real life. To sum up, In the book Mr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde we can see how Mr. Hyde is perceived as an ugly character because of his physical appearance and how it affects other people’s perceptions and close contact with him.
