erman Webster Mudgett
was born on May 16, 1861,
in Gilmanton, NH to Levi
Mudgett and Theodate Price. His
father was from a farming family
and his parents were both devout
Methodists. Although they were
possibly a very loving family for
the most part, there were stories
of his father being a very violent
alcoholic who would beat on his
wife and child. Mudgett claimed
that as a child, he was forced
by bullies to view and touch the
body of a human skeleton after
his classmates learned that he
was afraid of the doctor. This
attempt at scaring him apparently
ended up having a reverse affect
and may have led to his perceived
fascination with death.
