NE METRO NONPROFITS

The northeast metro is lucky to have a number of nonprofits that serve the community. Many have been providing free or low-cost services to residents for decades.

White Bear Area Food Shelf
The White Bear Area Food Shelf( WBAFS) is operating in a climate of increasing uncertainty. Changes in SNAP eligibility and the increased immigrant and U. S. Customs enforcement activity in our community have placed added strain on families already struggling to make ends meet. At the same time, more neighbors than ever are turning to the food shelf for support.
In the past four years, visits to the WBAFS have tripled. While some of that growth reflects expanded access, much of it mirrors the rising need in the community.
The food shelf served more than 78,000 visitors last year, supporting well over 300 people each day. Those served include families with children, who make up 34 percent of visitors, and seniors, who represent 12 percent.
Even as demand has grown, community support has remained strong. Compelled by the growing need in our community, over 600 people gave food and funds to the food shelf for the first time in 2025. This outpouring of support ensured the food shelf could scale and adapt to provide food to all who entered its doors.
“ Every day, I witness firsthand how deeply this community cares for its people— providing stability and certainty in times that often feel anything but certain,” said Perry Peterson, Executive Director of the White Bear Area Food Shelf.
Looking ahead, the White Bear Area Food Shelf remains focused on flexibility, sustainability and food choice. By reducing food waste and offering healthy, culturally connected options, the organization aims to adapt quickly to changing community needs to ensure that our neighbors don’ t have to worry about having enough to eat.
