Newtrax , Inc ., is a White Bear Lakebased transportation company originally founded to serve clients of Merrick , Inc ., and PAI , Inc . In addition to providing group transportation services to more than 600 adults with disabilities in the Northeast Metro , the organization serves seniors , at-risk youth , and immigrant populations . Newtrax also serves as Ramsey County ’ s TCAP ( Transportation Coordination Assistance Project ) collaborating with organizations throughout the county on transportation related projects .
“ 2023 was an absolutely fantastic year for Newtrax . We provided more rides than we ever have before ,” said Mike Greenbaum , who has served as the Executive Director of Newtrax , Inc . for the past nine years .
In 2023 , the transportation company provided people with 1,200 daily rides to work , school , doctor ’ s appointments , and enrichment opportunities , using its fleet of 54 buses and one minivan .
In addition to working with Merrick , Inc ., and PAI , Inc ., the company also serves students in the White Bear Area School District and Roseville School District , as well as the youth programs VocalEssence , ComMUSICation and Project Success . Plus , people served by Alight , which provides aid to displaced immigrants ; dozens of senior residential programs ; and seniors living on their own as well .
“ We actually expanded our services for seniors in 2023 by adding a couple more senior circulator loops . We started a Maplewood / Oakdale senior circulator loop in May and in early 2024 are starting a new one serving seniors in the Shoreview / Arden Hills / North Oaks area , which we are very excited about ,” said Greenbaum .
A loop is a two and a half to three-hour weekly bus transportation program that picks up from senior communities in the area and drops off at area businesses , including shopping and restaurant locations . In addition to the two new loops , there are five other loops that serve South White Bear Lake , North White Bear Lake , the Forest Lake Area , Stillwater and the Eastside St . Paul areas . Also in 2023 , Newtrax participated in an autonomous vehicle test conducted in cooperation with MNDOT , the City of White Bear Lake , Ramsey County , the local YMCA , the White Bear Area School District and a number of other partners . The objective was to pilot a test of a self-driving shuttle in all different weather conditions .
The shuttle picked people up the PAI location at Linden and County Road E , and had stops at the Boulders and Willow Woods apartment buildings , as well as the YMCA . The loop ran for four hours a day from August 2022 to March 2023 .
“ We ’ re also excited about the local recognition we received in 2023 .” Newtrax , Inc . was named the Best Place to Work in the White Bear Press ’ Reader ’ s Choice 2023 Best of the Press award program . “ The Best of the Press award is a testament to our commitment to our employees and our dedication to continuous improvement ,” said Greenbaum .
Newtrax also received recognition from the White Bear Area Chamber , which named it an organization of Excellence .
Greenbaum said he is excited about the new opportunities ahead in 2024 , which include expanding services into North St . Paul and West St . Paul , and
that ’ s not all . “ Since COVID , we have dealt with a lack of being able to get new buses and staffing challenges ,” he said .
“ In late 2023 we had an influx of driver applications , and through the first quarter of 2024 we ’ re anticipating 12 new buses . This will be the first time we ’ ve been able to get new buses since early 2020 .” More information about Newtrax can be found online at Newtrax . org
