MARKET & JOHNSON CELEBRATING 75 YEARS IN BUSINESS
One of the Northeast Metro ’ s newest construction companies is celebrating a major milestone in 2023 . Market & Johnson has now been in business for 75 years .
A special celebration is planned at the company ’ s annual client golf outing this summer , along with an additional event planned as part of the annual employee ’ s summer social in September ; but other than that it will be business as usual in 2023 .
Market & Johnson ’ s History
Market & Johnson was established in Eau Claire , Wisconsin in 1948 by Juel Market and Milt Johnson , who had previously both been employed by Walker Brothers Construction as carpenters building homes in the Eau Claire area .
“ My father and his co-worker felt they could do more — build more homes , concentrate on quality , and deliver on customer ’ s needs , so they decided to go out on their own ,” said Juel ’ s son , Dan Market , who is Chairman of the Board of Directors for Market & Johnson . Like his father , Dan began his career as a carpenter .
He explains that Market & Johnson started off as a homebuilding company , completing 50 homes in Wisconsin before deciding to switch the focus to commercial construction . The company ’ s first project was an addition to the Altoona High School in Eau Claire , which was finished in 1956 .
Since then , Market & Johnson has worked on more than 3,200 projects in Eau Claire and LaCrosse , Wisconsin , and more recently in the Stillwater / Hudson area of Minnesota . Among the projects completed so far in Minnesota , the Pierce County Jail , Polk County Highway Department and St . Paul Police Training Center .
Realizing the potential for numerous new projects in Minnesota , in 2013 Market & Johnson opened an office
in Oakdale . “ As a firm we have always completed projects in the western counties of Wisconsin , but managed them from our Eau Claire office . With the strong growth of the St . Croix & Stillwater areas we decided to add resources dedicated to that area .
“ As a firm we also believe in being part of a community both for business , but also as a resource to the community , and a place that our employees can live and be involved . Coupling this all together , we decided to open an office in Oakdale , Minnesota , which ultimately moved to our current location in Stillwater ,” said Market .
Market & Johnson ’ s Stillwater office opened in 2022 , and the company ’ s body of work in Minnesota is growing . “ We have done a variety of projects in the Metro area . Examples include the Justice Allen Page Elementary School in Maplewood , Stillwater Schools and Minnesota Rubber ’ s Experiential Center . We ’ ve also constructed facilities in Minnesota for companies like Xcel Energy , 3M and Niron ,” said James Hanke , Business Development Manager for Market & Johnson .
Market & Johnson started with just two employees , but today averages 300 field
employees supported by the company ’ s office and field support staff . Services available include all the components of construction management , including pre-construction budgeting & value engineering , experienced project scheduling , quality control , project communications , and project close-out .
“ We can add the most benefit to our clients when we are involved during the design process . It is during this early phase that many of the decisions that are made will affect the final cost of the project . With our extensive experience on the cost side of a project , we can bring the element of what will this project cost while we are still in the design phase . In our industry they call this process value engineering ,” said Market .
