Rice harvest in Bangladesh: Transforming agricultural systems calls for
transdisciplinary approaches.
Figure 6.15 Multiple dimensions should be considered in transformation processes
for systems change.
Breakthrough fertilizer technology will be a powerful
tool to catalyze a systems change and bring about
the next mega-trend in agricultural development but
pursuing quick fixes to such a comprehensive
issue will be an oxymoron.
Operational decisions like spraying at the field level can be taken by a
single farmer, resolved by a single disciplinary solution and executed
within hours or days. Tactical decisions at the farm level, for instance,
such as growing a different crop involves more actors, several years
and multiple objectives to be met. Changes in value chains and at
a regional scale can only be achieved through strategic changes
involving multiple actors and multiple disciplines to be pursued over
many years.
