Andrea's Advice: Six Powers of Love

Dishonesty

"Love can cause lies and dishonesty as it did in the lives of Romeo and Juliet. When they fell in love, their families were enemies. Their love would have been forbidden by their parents. In an effort to maintain their love for each other and romanticize their relationship, the pair was willing to hide their love from their families. Juliet continued to lie to her mother and father. She failed to tell them that she did not want to marry Paris because she was in love with Romeo. In fact, the Capulets and the Montagues were completely unaware of Romeo and Juliet's relationship until after their deaths."

Betrayal

"Love causes people to betray others, even those who are closet to them. There are many examples of betrayal in the lvies of Romeo and Juliet. The nurse betrays Juliet when she tells her to marry Paris. Perhaps she influenced Juliet's decision in an effort to protect Juliet. However, she did not demonstrate the same loyalty that she always had as the motherly figure in Juliet's life."

Despair

"Unfortunately for Romeo and Juliet their forbidden love resulted in great misfortune--their death, Their determination to maintain and grow their relationships resulted in the worst possible scenario. Juliet was desperate to avoid marrying Paris and as a result consumed a sleeping potion. When Romeo was told that Juliet was "dead" he did not want to live. Romeo and Juliet were desperate for each other's love and without it did not want to exist."

"Falling in Love is wonderful and a source of happiness. However, it is especially important to fall in love carefully. Love is powerful and can be dangerous and result in tragic events, just as is did in the lives of Romeo and Juliet."
