I
f you ever spend any time around
former Governor Jim Douglas, it’s as
though he knows everybody he runs
into. The consummate politician,
Douglas can work a crowd expertly, most
of the time recognizing the people he is
talking to and even getting their names
correct. His memory for Vermonters is
uncanny. Douglas has proudly traveled
the state — even becoming a member of
the 251 Club, an organization founded in
1954 made up of Vermont enthusiasts whose
objective is to visit the state’s 251 towns and
cities. He loves Vermont.
In fact, Douglas, a Middlebury resi-
dent, is very representative of Vermont:
good-natured, hard-working, folksy,
witty and pragmatic. So it is no surprise
that the Republican served four terms as
governor. Everyone seems to have a story
about Jim Douglas.
Politics connects a person to a commu-
nity. So does journalism — and specifi -
cally the photojournalists.
As part of their job, photojournalists –
“photogs,” if you will — work front lines
of news events. They capture, a moment
at a time, our triumphs and failures, our
tragedies and celebrations. They chronicle,
with visual splendor, what makes Ver-
mont unique, quirky, beautiful and fun.
They become celebrities in their own
right.
Jeb Wallace-Brodeur has been taking
photos of Vermonters for decades. He is
one of the most accomplished photog-
raphers in the state, and is one of the
most well-known individuals in central
Vermont. By virtue of being in constant
contact with our communities, Jeb knows
everybody. In fact, he noted recently that
he has taken photographs of grandchil-
dren of individuals he captured on fi lm
decades ago now.
Josh Kuckens, who joined The Times
Argus over a year ago, has brought a fresh
set of eyes to the region, and is fi nding
new faces in old places. In short order,
Vermonters are getting to know Josh and
his talents behind the lens.
This publication is a tribute not just to
the faces of Vermonters — some well-
known and some lesser-known — but to
the memorable work of these news pho-
tographers. These portraits show people
working, playing, posing and pondering.
These are faces of our neighbors and
friends, our colleagues, or just familiar
smiles or bright eyes we encounter with-
out knowing names.
News is hard to stomach some days.
But even on the most rigorous news
days, photographs provide those visual
reminders that humanity (and nature)
work in the most profound ways.
We long to glimpse at our Vermont –
and the Vermonters who complete our
communities.
Today we celebrate both sides of
the camera and the magic made in the
middle.
