Our COMMUNITY

Reinbow Riding Center Hosts Annual Volunteer Training
As Reinbow Riding Center , a local therapeutic horsemanship center established in 2008 , gears up for the new season , we begin by hosting our annual Volunteer Orientation Clinic on May 11 at 10am . This clinic will be held at our riding facility located at Stone Wall Farm , 892 Tarbellville Rd . in Belmont , VT .
This Clinic is the first community event we do each year inviting anyone interested in volunteering to join us . Please join us for this event and be introduced to the wonderful world of therapeutic horsemanship , a world that helps improve the lives of our many special needs participants . Our mission is to improve the wellbeing of individuals with unique physical , emotional , and / or cognitive needs through a special therapeutic equine experience . To do this requires many helpful hands and wonderful horses . This program gives individuals with challenges a chance to experience the generosity of horses allowing them to gain confidence , improve their physical abilities , and develop a sense of independence .
To volunteer you do not need to be a “ horse person ” or have any experience with horses . We will be happy to teach you . You must be 14 years of age to work with the horses , but there are also many other volunteer opportunities available that do not involve working directly with horses . There are all sorts of tasks that need doing from helping maintain the grounds to administration , special events , publicity , photography , videotaping , and so much more ! High school , college students , and others can also participate to get credit for community service requirements . To learn more , visit reinbowridingcenter . org / volunteer or contact janetupton @ reinbowridingcenter . org .
Bennington College Hosts Colloquium on Reginald Shepherd ’ 88
At 7pm on May 15 , the Literature faculty at Bennington College will host the second Ben Belitt Colloquium on Arts and Literary Culture in Tishman Auditorium . The event will be livestreamed and open to the public . The Colloquium is funded by a grant from the Winston Foundation . The 2024 Ben Belitt Colloquium assembles a panel of contemporary writers to discuss the work and life of Reginald Shepherd ‘ 88 ( 1963-2008 ), an underrecognized member of the Bennington group of writers from the 1980s . Queer , Black , controversial for both his poetics and his political stances , Shepherd was the author of four poetry volumes and two essay collections before his death in 2008 .
The University of Pittsburgh Press is publishing a new collection of Shepherd ’ s poems , The Selected Shepherd , edited by National Book Award winning poet Jericho Brown , in April . The 2024 Ben Belitt Colloquium on Shepherd ’ s work will bring Brown ; the MacArthur Award-winning novelist Jonathan Lethem ’ 86 , a classmate of Shepherd ’ s at Bennington ; and celebrated poet Camille Rankine to talk about Shepherd ’ s literary legacy and the renewal of interest in his polarizing work . bennington . edu .
Acclaimed Architectural Historian in Putney
The Landmark Trust USA ( LTUSA ) invites the community to learn more about one of our region ’ s most distinctive architectural typologies , one that many Northern New Englanders call home : the connected farm building . On May 14 at 7pm , LTUSA will host noted scholar and vernacular architecture historian Thomas C . Hubka to speak on his seminal book Big House , Little House , Back House , Barn . The lively and informative presentation will take place at Next Stage Arts , 15 Kimball Hill in Putney , VT and will be simultaneously live streamed online . The book , which received the Abbot Lowell Cummings Award from the Vernacular Architecture Forum , has been in continuous publication for 40 years and has become a scholarly and popular standard for New England architectural history and cultural studies . This engaging talk will highlight the four essential components of the stately and beautiful connected farm buildings made by nineteenth-century New Englanders that stand today as a living expression of a rural culture , offering insights into the people who made them and their agricultural way of life . Books will be available for purchase and signing . This program is supported in part by Vermont Humanities with space provided by Next Stage . landmarktrustusa . org .
