After a 28-point senior season at Norwich University , Simonetti made the exceptional one-fell pole-vault from a Division III college program to an NHL-AHL shuttle . He would play the majority of his rookie pro campaign in 1984-85 with the Bruins to the tune of 43 games . He logged 72 more over the next three years between annual conditioning stints in the minors before retiring in 1988 .

Miller ’ s Catamounts sought to match the program ’ s mid- ’ 90s standards from when the scrappy Thomas tended UVM ’ s crease . He was the go-to goaltender throughout his eligibility , going 81-43-15 with nine shutouts and bolstering Vermont ’ s first Frozen Four run in 1996 . His . 914 save percentage has since been matched or surpassed only by Brody Hoffman ( class of 2015 ) and Joe Fallon ( class of 2008 ) on the Catamount career leaderboard . Drafted but never signed by the NHL ’ s Quebec Nordiques ( now Colorado Avalanche ), Thomas detoured around North America and Finland for five years before landing back in New England . He made his NHL debut as a Bruin in October 2002 and refined his craft in Providence for the better part of four years before permanently rising to The Show in 2006 . Thomas , who regularly spent his summers training back on the UVM campus , would play the majority and peak of his big-league years in Boston , winning two Vezina Trophies as the league ’ s most outstanding netminder plus the 2011 Stanley Cup championship and playoff MVP award .
