Charles F . Adams : Breakaway Success

Fun Facts to Break the Ice

A deeper dive into Vermont hockey and the Green Mountain State ’ s ties to the beloved Boston Bruins
In addition to their founder , Charles F . Adams , the Boston Bruins have had three notable broadcasters , one groundbreaking coach , and four players with substantial Vermont connections .
Tom Caron
The 1985 Saint Michael ’ s College graduate launched his sportscasting career in the greater Lake Champlain region at WPTZ Channel 5 . Three more stops in New Hampshire and his native Maine yielded a cable breakout at the New England Sports Network in 1995 . By 1997 , Caron was NESN ’ s NHL studio host , manning the half-hour Bruins Digest pregame show until 2004 . His two prime foci lately have been the Red Sox and Hockey East . Since the University of Vermont Catamounts switched conferences from the ECAC in 2005 , that has meant revisiting his collegiate town to cover select contests at Gutterson Fieldhouse .
Bob Lobel
Lobel was an Ohio homebody through college , then came out east to continue his education at UVM in the late 1960s . Following his graduate studies , he stuck around Burlington and plunged into sportscasting at ABC 22 and WJOY radio . By 1976 , those commitments , in addition to stints in New Hampshire , had brought Lobel to Boston ’ s WBZ , where he logged three-plus decades in prominent TV and radio positions . His time spent as Hall of Fame play-by-play man Bob Wilson ’ s partner in the Bruins booth from 1977-78 was a notable highlight . That season saw eleven 20-goal scorers leading a team that finished second in both the regular season and playoffs to the dynastic Montreal Canadiens .
Danielle Marmer
The inspiring journey of Danielle Marmer , a Dorset native , is a testament to the evolving landscape of hockey — particularly in regards to the inclusion and advancement of women in the sport . Danielle Marmer ’ s story began at Manchester ’ s Riley Rink at Northshire Civic Center , where she spent countless hours as a young child . This rink served as a crucible for her burgeoning passion for hockey and figure skating . Marmer ’ s path forward took a significant turn at Quinnipiac University , where she played Division I women ’ s hockey from 2013 through 2017 . Marmer ’ s transition to coaching began with a stint as an assistant coach at Connecticut College , followed by a return to Quinnipiac for her Master ’ s degree . While there , she also worked in player development and hockey operations . These experiences culminated in her groundbreaking appointment as a player development and scouting assistant for the Boston Bruins . In doing so , she became the first female , on-ice coach for the storied NHL franchise , a significant milestone in the sport ’ s history . Marmer served on the Bruins coaching staff from July 2022 to September 2023 . She worked alongside former Bruins defenseman , Adam McQuaid , focusing on developing the organization ’ s prospects . Today , Marmer currently oversees the Professional Women ’ s Hockey League ( PWHL ) Boston team as General Manager . She continues to inspire young girls and women as a role model and a harbinger of change in the world of professional hockey .
Sean McDonough
A quarter-century of outstanding regional and national play-by-play and sideline reporting helped to yield an honorary degree from Southern Vermont College . By the time he garnered that accolade in
2007 , McDonough had made a four-year tenure as the Bruins ’ TV-38 studio host ( 1985-89 ) plus stints as their rinkside reporter — including at the old Boston Garden ’ s final game in 1995 — a part of that diverse resume .
Kevan Miller
The Greater Los Angeles native first came to New England in 2004 , enrolling as a sophomore at the Berkshire School in Sheffield , Massachusetts . Three years of prep hockey sweetened his collegiate credentials , and the Catamounts recruited him . His freshman year culminated in Vermont ’ s first venture to Boston ’ s TD Garden as 2008 Hockey East semifinalists . The Catamounts upset Boston University before losing the final to the eventual national champions from Boston College . Miller then helped UVM to the 2009 Frozen Four , where they bowed out to eventual champion BU , as a junior . A subsequent recession in the team ’ s fortunes did not ravage his individual outlook as a senior , and the Bruins granted him an immediate amateur tryout with their farm team in Providence for the 2010-11 homestretch . The stay-at-home defenseman sported black and gold for the balance of his playing days , representing Providence for 154 games , then Boston for 352 contests in eight seasons between 2013 and 2021 .
Dave Reece
When he left Burlington in 1971 , Reece boasted an all-time UVM-best . 900 career save percentage . A tryout for the 1972 U . S . Olympic team followed by three years in the Bruins farm system yielded his first crack at the NHL in 1975 , though he would only muster 14 appearances . That stint ended in mortifying fashion when , on February 7 , 1976 , Reece played the full scope of an 11-4 loss in Toronto , with Maple Leafs legend Darryl Sittler tallying
