He spoke for her . “ Come on up here ,” he told her . “ I want you to do something for me .” He shifted the knife to the other hand , then back to where it had been . The blade was pointing down toward the boys in the swimming hole . They were almost a mile from the house . Hugh wouldn ’ t hear her over the rushing water . If she told the boys to run , they ’ d have to pass the man with the knife . Scott started to speak , but she shook her head and said , “ Stay with them . Keep them safe .” Then to the man , “ I ’ m coming up .” Her voice carried out and up and over the glade . Green innocent moss . Pillowy planks of rock . She stood up and started walking . n
