Opening Act
Built in 1912-1913 by George T . Chaffee , the Paramount Theatre , originally known as The Playhouse Theatre , opened its doors on January 16 , 1914 . Designed in the classical style reflecting the “ City Beautiful ” movement of the time , the exterior architecture and Victorian opera house-inspired interior made it one of the finest theatres in America . With seating for 1,000 patrons , the theatre featured Du Barry rose tapestry , gold leaf decorations , and a grand oval painting representing music , lyric art , and drama .
In its early days , The Playhouse hosted top performers traveling between Montreal and Boston via the Rutland Railroad . Notable acts included Tom Thumb , Will Rogers , Sarah Bernhardt , Ethel Barrymore , and Harry Houdini . The theatre also served as a refuge during the disastrous flood of 1927 , providing shelter for Rutland residents .
With the advent of “ talking pictures ,”
The Playhouse transitioned to a motion picture theatre and was renamed The Paramount in 1931 . It became a hub for both films and vaudeville performances , with notable screenings such as Gone with the Wind . During World War II , the theatre played a patriotic role , hosting farewell send-offs for soldiers and war bond rallies .
Despite its success , the theatre faced challenges in the 1970s , and it closed its doors in 1975 . The venue remained empty until the Center on the Alley ,
