The Yen Smiths ’ move to Bellows Falls wasn ’ t just a change of scenery ; it was a transformational shift in lifestyle , as well . Kaelan and Blessing ’ s extensive backgrounds in the fields of film , design , and education gave way to a deep desire for a lifestyle that was more sustainable and community-oriented . When the pandemic hit in 2020 , the Yen Smiths were living in Los Angeles . Over the course of the lockdowns , they realized that they wanted to find a place that was more in line with their vision for a sustainably-minded and fulfilling life . After careful consideration , they started looking for a new home base in a less densely-populated area . Over the course of the next two years , they worked together to hatch their plans for a great escape , and the fates began to align in their favor .

They initially considered the Pacific Northwest , but eventually turned their attention to the Northeast . After shifting their focus , they discovered a treasure trove of historic farmhouses that were relatively affordable when compared to the California real estate market . They sold their property in Los Angeles in 2021 , and began temporarily living in separate locations while pursuing graduate degrees . Kaelan spent some time at home with his family in California while attending UC Davis , and Blessing continued her studies at the Free University of Bolzano-Bozen in Bolzano , Italy . |

In January 2022 , they stumbled upon the Harvest Barn Inn through online research . It was a gorgeous property that embodied the essence of their dreams . The Inn , established 30 years ago at the site of an 1881 farm house ( and originally called Horsefeathers ) was a well-known fixture in Bellows Falls .
